The lastest audio guide tour of the KHM-Museumsverband (Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna) is dedicated to the eventful history of the Habsburg dynasty, covering their 650 years of reign.
Taking place in the Neue Hofburg, the newest part of the Hofburg complex in Vienna, the multimedia House-of-Habsburg-Tour takes visitors on 20-stop tour through the former imperial palace and focuses on three main topics: the remarkable architecture of the building, the history of the Habsburgs and their passion for the arts.
Neue Hofburg – Imperial Vienna
Built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the construction of the so-called „Corps de Logis“, planned by Gottfried Semper and Karl Hasenauer, began in 1881 and was completed after almost 40 years. However, the imperial living quarters were never occupied by their intended residents Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi.
After the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the founding of the Austrian republic, the site today houses two museums and two collections of the KHM-Museumsverband: the Weltmuseum Wien, the Ephesos Museum, the Imperial Armoury and the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments.
The Habsburg Legacy
The new House-of-Habsburg-Tour at the Neue Hofburg traces the history of the Habsburg lineage through historically important family members, including Emperor Maximilian I, Emperor Charles V, Emperor Leopold I and Empress Maria Theresia.
With exhibits from the Imperial Armoury and the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, the stops of the tour offer visitors real-life points of reference to the aurally told stories of the audio guide. The tour also highlights the treasures of the Habsburg collections.
The ticket for the House-of-Habsburg-Tour is available in 10 languages at all ticket offices of the KHM-Museumsverband. It costs € 23 or € 19 (reduced price) and includes admission and audio guide to the Imperial Armoury, the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments and the Weltmuseum Wien.
